What do Pharmaceutical Engineers do?

Pharmaceutical Engineers are vital to improving the health and well being of society through the development, large-scale production, packaging and delivery of health-care products. In particular Pharmaceutical Engineers:

• Participate in inter-disciplinary teams working to discover new pharmaceutical compounds and develop them for market delivery
• Determine, on a laboratory scale, the exact quantities of each constituent needed to form a given quantity of new pharmaceutical compounds
• Produce pharmaceutical compounds on a scale appropriate for extensive testing to ensure safety and efficacy of use
• Devise the chemistry to produce pharmaceutical compounds in a consistent and pure form
• Design and implement economically viable manufacturing processes to produce pharmaceutical compounds in a manner that is safe and maintains the effectiveness of the laboratory scale chemical process
• Engineer systems to deliver the correct dosage of pharmaceutical product for specific conditions and, increasingly, to deliver the personalised medicines targeted to the needs of individual patients
