One way to study marine populations is to identify and study individual animals. Marine animals can be recognized by natural markings (e.g. colour or patterns), or simply by applying tags. By observing the identified animals from year to year, much useful information such as the behaviour and reproduction of the species can be obtained. The tagging of aquatic animals is a commonly employed method for identifying species' movements and migrations, abundance, age and growth, mortality and behaviour. For instance, marine fish are tagged and tracked with a suite of different electronic devices of varying degrees of sophistication. Hence, tagging is particularly important to marine biologists. With such information, a better understanding of the marine animals would be known leading to improvement in the management of the fisheries as well as giving marine biologists better understanding about marine animals. The aim of this project is to conduct research into the development of a novel injectable biomaterial for implanting into the tissue of abalone. It is expected that this biomaterial would form the basis of a tagging method for use by marine researchers. Interests
