Research Topic

Metal Contaminated Waste Water Treatment System - Design and Optimisation

Research Abstract

Metal contaminated wastewaters are an increasingly large problem worldwide. Their production is associated with mining, industrial processes and municipal wastewater. Currently available water treatment technologies include lime dosing, sulfate reducing bacteria bioreactors, engineered wetlands and reverse osmosis. These present a variety of problems: high energy usage, significant production of waste as a by-product, low quality water output, low reliability, high establishment costs and/or high operating costs. A system has been designed that treats metal contaminated waters by using a controlled environment to recover contaminants from solution using naturally derived adsorptive materials (biosorbents). The research will focus on two parts: the optimisation of the system design for recovery of single metal concentrates and high volume water treatment, and the development of durable and highly efficient biosorbents.
